Tugtupite is Greenland's most popular gemstone and is unofficially considered the national stone.
Tugtupite is one of the rare minerals. It is found only in Narsaq in Greenland, on the Kola Peninsula in Siberia and Mont Saint-Hilaire in Quebec in Canada. Only Tugtupite from the Greenland deposit is strongly colored.
The reddish color is enhanced by UV radiation (sunlight), which in turn fades when stored in the dark. Under UV lamp, Tugtupit is salmon-colored.
The name of the stone comes from the legend, which tells that the girl Tuttu (reindeer) gave birth in secret in the mountains, and where the afterbirth and blood fell, Tugtupit was born.
The jewelry is rhodium-plated. The jewelry retains its shine for a longer time without having to be polished or cleaned. Rhodium-plated is roughly the same color as a piece of white gold jewelry. Normally, a rhodium-plated piece of jewelry costs a little more than a regular silver piece.
Avoid getting perfume on your jewelry, as it can damage the shine and finish.
